Guchi, born Ugochi Lydia Onuoha in 1996, is a vibrant Nigerian Afropop singer celebrated for her electric energy and soulful lyrics. Known professionally as Guchi, she stands out as the second of four children in a closely-knit family from Mbaise, Imo State, though her early roots trace back to Kaduna State where she was born, before growing up amidst the cultural vibrance of Abuja.
Growing up, music was woven into the fabric of Guchi’s childhood. With a father passionate about music and the legendary Michael Jackson influencing her tastes, Guchi’s first performances were in her church choir and for her grandparents at just seven years old. The nurturing support she received helped build her confidence and artistry from the start.
Her academic journey began at Edo State University, and later continued part-time at the University of Lagos, where she studied Theatre and Media Arts. These experiences shaped her creative vision and fueled her passion to pursue a full-fledged music career.
Guchi’s professional career began in 2012, but it was her official debut single, “No Be Jazzy,” released in April 2019, that truly marked her entry into the Afropop spotlight. That same year, she joined PG Records Entertainment and released “Addicted,” followed soon by the hit “Closer”. In October 2020, she dropped her acclaimed EP titled “I Am Guchi,” showcasing her versatility in Afropop, dance hall, and high-life genres.
In 2021, “Jennifer” became a viral sensation, igniting a massive TikTok challenge and leading to a remix with Tanazanian star Rayvanny. Later, her track “Benzema,” an ode to famed footballer Karim Benzema, soared to Number 3 on the Billboard Top Triller Global Chart, reflecting her growing influence beyond Nigerian borders. Her collaborative spirit continued in 2022, when she was featured on Rayvanny’s “Sweet” and released “Shattered”.
Beyond her music, Guchi became a two-year ambassador in January 2020 for Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, embracing advocacy and positive influence for youth and the community. Her achievements, marked by millions of streams, major performances, and recognition such as Female Artist of the Week on music platforms like Mdundo, solidify her reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest musical talents.
Guchi’s story resonates with listeners who find hope and relatability in her journey. She stands as a role model for young African women with dreams of global success, blending her distinctive voice, magnetic stage presence, and heartfelt lyrics to create music that’s both danceable and deeply meaningful.
Guchi continues to evolve, inspiring audiences not just in Nigeria but across Africa and the world, remaining a passionate advocate for music, creativity, and positive change.
